Jake's New BFF

Forget Matt and Lance, Jake Gyllenhaal has a new buddy.

Jake was spotted in San Diego last week, visiting the set of HBO's pilot "John from Cincinnati," where his pal Austin Nichols plays the lead. Gyllenhaal arrived and was immediately escorted to Nichols' trailer, where they spent most of the day. Austin left the trailer only to grab some grub for the two from catering tables. This photo shows the best friends at a Lakers game in 2006.

Then, this past Saturday, TMZ spies spotted Jake and Austin in Los Angeles, having a quiet dinner at Jar restaurant. The two eluded having their pic taken by paparazzi when they escaped through the kitchen's backdoor. Reese Witherspoon, who has been romantically linked with Jake, was not present.

This is not the first we've seen of Jake and Austin -- their friendship goes back to the 2004 filming of "The Day After Tomorrow." Unlike the trio of Jake, Matt and Lance, this duo appears to be a lasting friendship.

18. Some of you girls are totally rabid about stuff like this. You either have the deeply offended attitude of dim bulb Anon at 4:46 or you think you're Professor of Sexuality & Sexual Diseases like Melissa.

God, when will some teenybopper girls grow up? IF Jake and Austin are a couple then why would you even say nasty things about AIDS etc. Why wouldn't you wish them well if they're just friends or anything more? Why is it always easier for someone to be a total messed up beeyotch instead of having anything good to say?

I think Jake and Austin would make a very interesting couple. It's obvious to me they look happy to be together. Why is that a bad thing?

21. That must have been a boring ass Lakers game.... only action that happend that night was when Jake "Slammed" him in the ass... then "Dunked" his balls sqaure in Austin's mouth! Jake then got called for "double dribbling". Austin followed up in style with a 3 point "shot" right across Jake's face!

He shoots... HE SCORES!!!!

22. No sightings of Jake & Austin for ages and now since this stupid J/R rumor started two different sets of pics of them biking and now these sightings. Coincidence? I think not. Subtle way of saying don't believe everything you read about Gyllenspoon IMO.

25. I used to think that Jake was definitely straight and these rumors were without substance, but now I'm beginning to wonder. No photos of him and Reese but loads with Austin. And now this.
Plus the fact that he hasn't had a single relationship (even a brief fling) with any females since splitting with Kirsten.
Oh, and Reese spotted in the very public Mr Chow with a galpal.
Something's definetely off.

28. #1. I've seen pictures of Jake looking at dogs and cars the way he's looking at this guy. Jake gazes. He looks at his sister the same way.
#2. This guy, Austin has a LOT more to gain from associating with Jake than vice versa. Who ever heard of this jerk before he started hanging out with Jake! He's just not memorable.
#3. If i was seeing a woman in the middle of a divorce and we totally didn't want you to track us, I'd throw somthing like this out there to throw you off. And it's obviously working. Dummies.
